Google Daydream VR release date: When is Android VR coming out?

Daydream will be available "this fall", which means somewhere between September and October 2016.

Google Daydream VR: What is Daydream?

We've got the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive (plus others) but Google is focused on mobile VR. Daydream is essentially the evolution of Google Cardboard and is not just a headset, but also a controller and part of Android N (see how to get Android N now.
The main problem with Cardboard - aside from the fact that it's uncomfortable - is latency. The motion-to-photon latency - the delay between you moving your head and the image updating on the screen - is a critical part of any VR system and is also key to you feeling immersed when wearing a headset. That's why there's a VR mode in Android N. Google says it has had to "all levels of the stack are optimised for getting a latency of under 20ms".
Daydream isn't a product you can buy - it's a platform for high-quality mobile VR for Android smartphones. It sets out the specifications and minimum requirements. Android smartphones will have a 'Daydream ready' badge, and will have to have high-performance sensors for head tracking, a minimum quality of display and a fast processor. Manufacturers which already have Daydream-ready phones (or are developing them) include Samsung, LG, HTC, Huawei, Alcatel, ZTE and Asus.

Few details were given in the Google I/O keynote, but the image above shows what a reference Daydream headset could look like. The phone still sits in front of lenses, and you'll have to wear headphones for immersive audio (just as you do with a Rift or HTC Vive. (See also: Best VR headsets 2016)
The controller is a bit like an Android TV or Apple TV remote. It has a clickable touchpad and a couple of buttons, so it's easy to use without looking at it. Crucially it has an orientation sensor so it knows where you're pointing, and you can use this to select things in the VR world.

In Android N, you'll have Google Play for VR. That means you can explore and install VR apps, games and watch videos in virtual reality, and it's also like a home screen for your favourite VR apps.

Google has updated some of its own apps for VR, including Google Play Movies, Street View, Google Photos. YouTube has been updated for VR as well. You'll be able to create playlists in VR, and it also support spatial audio, so sounds will come from different places depending on where you're looking. Plus, you'll be able to watch all standard videos as well as dedicated VR videos in YouTube.
